To start working on your communications skills, start practising in front of the mirror, practice making eye contact and try to speak slowly and clearly whenever you talk to someone. Start reading English newspapers and look for the words in the dictionary that you don’t know.
Ways to improve communication skills
1. Be Courageous:
Have confidence in whatever you say. Everyday take time and think about your opinions and feelings so that you can convey them to the others. Don’t hesitate by thinking that your views and opinions won’t be worth listening, who knows that the opinions you shared were the points people needed.
Practice is the key to everything. As it is said that practice makes man perfect. That’s why practice is really important in developing good communication skills. Practice with friends, family or in front of a mirror.
3. Make eye contact:
Whenever you are speaking or listening, always make eye contact with the person you are conversing because keeping eye contact shows the other person that you are interested in talking to them. This will keep them interested too.
Try making gestures with your hands and face and make your whole-body talk. Now, gestures depend upon the audience, like if the size of the audience is less than you can use small gestures but if you get more audience then try using larger gestures.
5. Mixed messages:
Don’t send mixed messages to your listener as it will make a bad impression. Try matching your words, gestures, facial expressions and tone. Like, don’t smile while disciplining someone as it will be ineffective.
6. Body language:
Body language is one of the most important parts in the communication skills as it can say and tell more than a mouth full of words.
Whenever you are communicating with someone, always stand in an open stance with arms relaxes at your sides. This shows that you are open to hearing what they have to say. Always try to avoid standing with arms crossed because this shows that you are not interested in what they are saying or you don’t want to communicate.
Hence good body language is important because it can either help a difficult conversation flow smoothly or can stop any communication before it even started.
7. Be a good listener:
Not only speaking but listening is also very important in good communicating skills. One should listen to the other person’s words and engage in communication about what other person is saying. This will help in developing your communication skills.
Other important points
Try pronouncing the words correctly, use the right words, practice to lower down your speed of talking, practice developing a confident voice and try to use the appropriate volume of speech according to the situation.
Hence by practising these points, you can develop and improve your communication skills.
